Motorbikes are a popular mode of transportation in many countries. They have been around for so long that it’s hard to pinpoint the exact date they were invented. Some people can’t decide if they want a dirt bike, street bike, or cruiser bike and don’t know what features each type offers.
Dirt Bikes
Dirt bikes are the go-to option for riders who prefer to take their motorbike out on trails or off-road. Dirt bikes were initially designed with racing in mind, lightweight, and very maneuverable. You can fit them with knobby tires, which provide a better grip than street bike tires when riding over rough terrain.
Dirt bikes are not as fast as street bikes, but they can still reach high speeds. They also offer a lot of suspension travel, which means that you’ll be able to ride over bumps and obstacles without jarring your spine. If you want to take your motorbike off-road, a dirt bike is a perfect choice.
Street Bikes
Street bikes are the most popular type of motorcycle. They’re designed for riding on paved roads and are typically used for commuting or sport riding. Street bikes can be further divided into two categories. Supersports street bikes are ultra-lightweight machines that are capable of reaching high speeds. They have a crouching riding position, long suspension travel and are usually equipped with advanced brakes.
Standard street bikes have a more upright riding position, similar to standard motorcycles. They tend to be heavier than Supersports models but still quite nimble in the turns due to their excellent ground clearance and a short wheelbase.
Cruisers
Cruisers are the most common type of motorbike and one of the oldest. They emphasize comfort over performance, but this doesn’t mean they can’t be fun to ride! Cruisers typically have a low seat height and position riders in an upright posture with both feet forward; great for cruising around town or taking a trip out of town. The engine will be located between the wheels for better balance, which gives them a lower center of gravity than other types like sportbikes.
Cruisers are available in various displacements and sizes but generally use an “E-Type” or push rod configuration to mate the camshaft with extended timings on the valves. This gives the cruiser engine a unique sound and feels, often compared to a V-twin Harley Davidson.
